Ensuring access to safe food in a globalised food system

In December 2025, I delivered a guest lecture at Leiden University College The Hague as part of the undergraduate course SDGs, Human Rights and International Law. The interdisciplinary course focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 2 (Zero Hunger) and invites students to critically engage with questions such as: What does the human right to food entail? How does international law mitigate the impact of conflict on food security? Is there accountability for undermining food security, and if so, where and how can it be pursued?

My guest lecture, titled Ensuring Access to Safe Food in a Globalised Food System, examined the often-overlooked relationship between food security and food safety. Students were encouraged to reflect on how these two fields—frequently treated as distinct in both scholarship and practice—are deeply interconnected. The lecture also highlighted the role of power asymmetries and privatisation in shaping food safety outcomes, underscoring why these structural factors are critical to consider when working towards more equitable and effective food systems.
