Hi! I’m Madhura and my world revolves around food! My life’s ambition is to help make our food system safer, more sustainable, and sufficient for everyone.
I am an Assistant Professor of Food Systems Governance with the Planetary Health group at Maastricht University. I’m affiliated with the department of System Earth Science and am based at the university’s Campus in Venlo. Broadly, my research aims to investigate how the food system can be transformed to support both human and planetary health, with a particular focus on safety, equity, and sustainability. I work on themes such as power asymmetries in food systems, food safety governance, food in the circular bioeconomy, corporate accountability in agri-food supply chains, inter- and transdisciplinary food systems education, and participatory research methods for food systems governance and stakeholder engagement.
I am also a qualified university teacher. Having completed the the Dutch university teaching qualification (basiskwalificatie onderwijs), I enjoy applying creative didactic techniques while teaching graduate and undergraduate courses focusing on food, sustainability, science communication, and qualitative research methods.
Next to my day job as an academic, I also enjoy being part of science communication projects that focus on how our food is produced, its social and environmental impacts, and the future of our food systems.
